Reading Bob's account of the Freedom ceremony for the Prison Service reminded me of a night many years ago, one of the very few times I met a Prison Officer.
I was on guard duty but we were liable to be tasked to any incident that might come up. That week two prison officers had been killed, including the Deputy Governer of Magilligan prison. CONSTABLE THOMAS MCCLINTON,
Killed by Irish Republican Army
On 2nd March 1974 at 3.55pm Constable McClinton, aged 28, was shot at point blank range by two youths while on beat patrol at Upper Donegall Street, Belfast he was killed instantly.

SERGEANT THOMAS MORROW,
Killed by Irish Republican Army
At 10.10pm on 29th February 1972 Sergeant Morrow, aged 28, with a colleague was talking to a security guard at a factory at Camlough Road, Newry, County Armagh about a report of intruders when gunmen fired on them, Sergeant Morrow died two days later on 2nd March 1972.
